Basildon 2 Cheshunt 0 -
Challenge Cup, 13th November
This Sunday saw the U16’s back in cup action
with a place in the quarter finals up for grabs. They were entertaining Cheshunt
from the EJA Hertfordshire division and a good game was in prospect with a
lovely day for it and on paper two well matched teams.
Basildon started
brightly dominating the early possession and the first chance to Izzy Ojo was
superbly saved by the keeper. Basildon were playing some wonderful football and
after 10 minutes some fine midfield play saw the ball come to Matt Tapley on the
edge of the area. He controlled the ball stepped inside and hit a rasping left
foot drive into the bottom left hand corner to put the Bee’s 1 up.
It all
looked to easy for Basildon they were creating chance after chance with the
Cheshunt keeper making some great saves and Matt Tapley and Liam Nash hitting
the bar and post. Basildon could have and should have been 5 up at half time
after playing one of their best halves of football this season but went in at
half time with only a 1 goal cushion.
You knew Cheshunt were going to come
out second half all guns blazing and they did, Basildon had lost the momentum
and were rocking. For 15 minute Cheshunt threw everything they had at the Bee’s
but the back 4 stood their ground and kept Basildon in front.
The tide
gradually began to turn, a stone wall penalty was denied to Basildon and this
really sparked them into action and saw them get back into their first half
mode. Again the Cheshunt keeper stood firm then a lovely ball from Aaron
Sibthorpe put Lee Aldrige through. After a mazy run down the right he cut into
the box and squared the ball to Scott Howells who was tackle, the ball came back
to Lee who some how manage to cross it to Liam Nash waiting on the back post to
head home an easy chance to give the Bee’s a 2 goal cushion.
The game was
over now the goal really knocked the wind out of Cheshunt and Basildon could
have added to the score line several times. In the end it finished 2 nil and a
place in the last 8, well done the U16’s.
